No. You don’t mess with perfection and this is a lot more than Noll ever would have wanted.

I don’t think I articulated myself here very well. Noll was all about the team being bigger than any individual. He would want the helmet and uniform to continue to represent the Pittsburgh Steelers. Anything more than a subtle remembrance would be inappropriate. His legacy will live on in history and eventually in legend anyway. That is the greatest honor a man can ever receive, IMO. He’ right there with Lombardi and Halas as one of the greatest coaches of all time, and certainly the greatest of the Super Bowl era.

I understand your point very well. Subtlety is in the eye of the beholder. If you want to play the game of “what Noll would have wanted”, then don’t do anything because he’d have wanted nothing at all, not even a patch with his initials.

But everyone wants a patch of some sort regardless of what Noll would have wanted, so the quaint notion that he gets a say in the matter goes out the door. The trick is to do something that is subtle and claasy yet also notable and memorable. We may not agree on what constitutes such an ideal, and that’s fair. For me, the famously blank side of the helmet presents a unique canvas and one time opportunity whereas a shoulder patch is trite and unexceptional. However, at the same time I understand the opposite view that you articulated.

I agree you don’t put anything on the blank side.

I don’t disagree with your view, however for an individual this important to the team history, an exception could be made. The decal could be noticeable yet very subtle at the same time (smaller than what you see above).

It will never happen, but I do think it worth considering for a season.
